Understanding trade lane analysis

What is trade lane analysis?

A trade lane is the trading corridor between an origin country and a destination market. Trade lane analysis compares how favourable that corridor is for your product by combining bilateral trade flows, trade agreements, tariff conditions, market access and administrative complexity into a single structured view.

Which sourcing factors are compared?

TradeIntel scores each lane across five drivers: bilateral trade flow, trade agreement status, tariff access, market access conditions and administrative complexity. When you confirm a 6-digit HS code, duty rates are retrieved live from the World Bank's WITS API (UNCTAD TRAINS database), with the WTO Timeseries API as an automatic backup source — the tariff year and source are always shown on the result; the other indicators are modelled estimates and are labelled as such.

How are tariffs and trade agreements considered?

The analysis checks whether a free trade agreement or preferential arrangement exists between the two countries and reflects applied tariff conditions for the selected product category. Preferential access typically improves a lane's tariff and agreement scores.

How should the recommendation be interpreted?

Scores are directional indicators to shortlist and compare options — not a final sourcing verdict. Use them to focus deeper commercial, quality and logistics due diligence on the strongest candidates.

What assumptions can affect a comparison?

Results depend on the product category selected, the reference year of reported trade data, and published tariff and agreement information, which can change. Company-specific factors such as supplier pricing, volumes and contract terms are not included. Always verify duty rates and rules of origin with a licensed customs broker before committing.
